Student Experience

MHA Student Experience

Successful health care administrators know how to develop a vision while engaging and inspiring others to realize it. The MHA program balances individual and group experiential learning, professional skill development and networking opportunities to ensure students enter the workplace ready to lead.

2024 Edition

Leaders in the MHAking

Each year, MHA students create a publication, Leaders in the MHAking, reflecting on their experiences. Read on to see the program through the eyes of the Class of 2024.

Weekly Seminars

Students meet and hear directly from local and national health care administration leaders from a wide range of sectors. Speakers discuss their career paths and engage students in professional development activities.

Alumni Engagement

A closed LinkedIn group of 600+ MHA alumni provides an instant professional network for new students. The program also regularly hosts alumni panels and networking events to foster connections and career opportunities across cohorts.

Shadow Experiences

Students shadow nurse leaders and administrators and tour facilities to see the impact of executive decision-making on day-to-day health care system operations.

Case Competition

At the end of the first year, students work in teams to compete in an internal case competition judged by professional health system administrators. This activity integrates core concepts learned in the first year—teamwork, strategy, analytics, finance, problem-solving, quality, performance improvement, and human resources—to develop a plan of action for a real-world scenario. It also offers students an opportunity to refine professional presentation skills.

Friday Night at the ER

In this internationally-acclaimed simulation activity, students work in teams of four to deliver high-quality, cost-efficient service within an allotted time.

Administrative Residency

All students participate in a paid administrative residency during their second year, which enables them to apply knowledge learned in the classroom, develop practical leadership skills in the field and network with successful health care professionals and executives. The residency placement process is similar to that of a medical school match process, with significant programmatic support to assist students in finding residencies that connect to their career goals. See our Administrative Residency [link to new page] page for more details.
