Olivia Sugarman, PhD, MPH, an Assistant Scientist in the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Dr. Sugarman studies how policies can promote access to high-quality health services for historically marginalized people, specifically people who use drugs.

Jirka Taylor, MPhil, MA is a PhD candidate at the Department of Health Policy and Management. He is interested in studying drug policy and intersections between policy systems would like to help policymakers and practitioners help navigate those intersections.

Annelise Ware, MHS recently graduated with a Masters of Health Science degree from the Bloomberg School of Public Health’s Department of Mental Health. Her master’s thesis was on child sexual abuse in aesthetic sports.

The Society for Advancement of Violence and Injury Research (SAVIR) held their annual conference April 7-9 at the New York Academy of Medicine in New York City. We were lucky to be hosted by the Columbia Center for Injury Science and Prevention. Over 500 participants from around the country participated in this premier conference to share and learn about life-saving research to prevent injuries and violence.

Most families in Surangudi village, India, have lost a limb or loved one in explosions and fires in the area’s fireworks factories, which produce 90% of the fireworks in India. 

One city in India produces 90% of the country’s fireworks, generating jobs and profits. But fireworks factory workers face risks of explosions and fires in their daily work—and some 50–100 die every year.

Public health innovations are all around us—from seatbelts, to water filtration systems, to the 911 line—and help to improve life expectancy in the U.S. every day.

We know that child sexual abuse is preventable, not inevitable. But we don’t talk about it like that. Talking about the reality of abuse matters. And talking about it means elevating survivor voices, demanding political leadership, and making the case for large-scale prevention.
