Experiences & Accomplishments
Dr. John M. Young is an Associate Teaching Professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Bloomberg School of Public Health and a scholar-practitioner with leadership experience across higher education, the federal government, senior military colleges, consulting, and academic medical centers. He previously served as Chief of Staff and Professor of Practice at the Virginia Military Institute, where he advised and partnered with the Superintendent, overseeing institutional operations, human resources, information technology, strategic planning, and risk management. He also held senior roles in academic medicine, including Vice Chair for Administration at the Department of Defense/Uniformed Services University (USU) and Program Director for the MS in Health Care Quality at The George Washington University (GW) School of Medicine and Health Sciences, where he also held a joint faculty appointments at GW Milken Institute School of Public Health and the School of Business. Earlier in his career, Dr. Young held federal leadership positions at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Innovation Center. As a senior advisor, he helped shape alternative payment models policy under the Affordable Care Act. He began his healthcare career in Chicago at Cook County Hospital, followed by a managed care fellowship at America's Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) and subsequent leadership roles at Duke University/NYLCare Health, Johns Hopkins Health System, and as COO of the Southern Maryland Physician-Hospital Organization. He served as a board director (public member) for the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy (FSBPT). He's held faculty positions at George Washington University, Uniformed Services University, Rush University, and Virginia Military Institute. A U.S. Marine Corps veteran and Colonel in the Virginia Militia, he holds a doctorate in information management from Syracuse University, a master's in leadership from Georgetown University, and a bachelor's in health administration from the University of Maryland. He holds certifications as Master Teacher (George Washington University) and Chief Risk Officer (Carnegie Mellon University). His scholarship interests include digital leadership and transformation, information security management, executive leadership and coaching, and the application of artificial intelligence in teaching and learning.
