Interested in health equity approaches that pair research with practice? This seminar exposes students to JHU faculty, policy officials, and community leaders on the frontlines of health equity work, providing practical skills and discussing real-world challenges and solutions.
Exposes Bloomberg American Health Initiative Fellows to JHU faculty, policy officials, and community leaders on health equity research, policy, and practice. Pairs faculty presentations with community/practitioner perspectives, followed by guided discussions on social determinants, evidence-based strategies, and implementation challenges. Includes topics on education, food environment, built environment, employment, healthcare, and social support through a health equity lens.
Learning Objectives
Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
- Describe the multifaceted nature of health equity through the lens of the various social determinants of health.
- Discuss the competing priorities and challenges researchers, practitioners, policy officials, and community leaders face in mitigating health disparities for marginalized populations.
- Identify innovative public health approaches and apply conceptual frameworks from implementation science and community-engaged research to develop programs that advance health equity.
- Engage with practitioners, community members, and policy makers to explore factors that influence the dissemination and sustainability of health equity programs.

This course is evaluated as follows:
- 50% Participation
- 50% Written Assignment(s)
Course delivered via Zoom with Slack discussion platform. Each session pairs faculty member with community/practitioner/policy leader. Semi-structured format includes presentations (10-15 min each) followed by discussion (20-25 min) covering social determinants, evidence-based responses, and practice/policy challenges.
