The course is most appropriate for individuals with a healthcare background who have taken biology and have some knowledge of anatomy and physiology, and individuals with a background in toxicology or an interest in learning more about the impact of toxic exposures on health outcomes.

Description
Explores adverse impacts on human health from a wide range of environmental and occupational toxicants, using a variety of methods. Covers toxicant-related health effects by organ system and by selected chemical categories, including metals, pesticides, solvents, and asphyxiants. Discusses the use of biomarkers in clinical evaluations of exposed individuals and populations. Addresses prevention of adverse health effects in exposed populations and assessment of causal relations. Presents a wide range of information resources which are then utilized in course work. Utilizes case-based examples throughout the course.
Learning Objectives
Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
  1. Recognize adverse health effects of environmental and occupational toxicants in individual patients and/or populations
  2. Develop a public health-based approach to clinical assessment that includes
  3. Obtain a detailed occupational/environmental history
  4. Utilize a resource base, including the Internet
  5. Discuss the application of appropriate diagnostic tests, such as biomarkers
  6. Define an evaluation and management plan for exposed patients and/or populations

Special Comments

The synchronous time be 1:30-2:50pm EST on Wednesdays and/or Fridays. These synchronous times are going to be for guest lecturers who do not pre-record their content and for the class presentation assignment, and a final exam review (1 week before final exam). It will be about 4-5 actual meetings total that are synchronous.
