Description
If you want an introduction to the field of planetary health as it relates to the health of low and middle income countries and tribal US areas. This includes understanding how climate, environmental factors, human health and animal health is measured and studied globally, and becoming familiar with methods to study global changes in climate and how they affect health.
Introduces the field of planetary health as it relates to the health of low and middle income countries and US tribal areas. Explains how climate, environmental factors, human health and animal health are measured and studied globally. Discusses methods and challenges in the study of global climate change and its affect on health.
Learning Objectives
Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
  1. Explain how changes in climate and the environment affect population health
  2. Describe the interface of land use, biodiversity and population health
  3. Explain an ecological perspective on the connections among human health, animal health, and ecosystem health (e.g., One Health)
  4. Identify the core functions of public health and the 10 Essential Services
  5. Choose a data source and method to analyze a specific planetary health problem and describe methodological challenges and limitations of the method chosen
  6. Identify and describe actionable, assessable, interdisciplinary public health interventions that can address a specific planetary health problem
