L.E.A.D. will host a series of interactive workshops about using anti-oppression frameworks in public health practice for students, faculty and staff at JHSPH this fall. The series is presented through a grant from the Hopkins Idea Lab and in collaboration with SPARC, a student advocacy group at JHSPH.

L.E.A.D. (an acronym that describes the group’s core goals and tenets for engagement: Liberate, Eradicate, Activate, Dismantle) is a collective of public health practitioners comprised of students, faculty, staff and alumni whose mission is:

[to] understand how health justice is inherently connected to larger liberation movements by building spaces for anti-oppression knowledge-building and action. Our goals are to create dialogue and intervene against unequal power distributions, as well as the structural and systemic inequities that are present in our lives and the communities with which we work.”

L.E.A.D. hosts regular “salons” throughout the academic year in which practitioners meet to discuss current events and generate ideas for communication that facilitates a more tolerant learning environment at JHSPH. This year, the group decided to also take on a teaching role in hopes of helping individuals incorporate anti-oppression frameworks to engage in better public health practice.

There are three workshops in the series (while it’s not a requirement to attend all three, it is highly encouraged as topics build on one another) with each session offered twice* to allow more people to attend. Anyone is welcome to sign up, especially those who are new to these concepts. L.E.A.D. hopes to bring together people with varying levels of familiarity with anti-oppression frameworks and language.

For further questions including information about joining L.E.A.D., please email the group or visit their Facebook page.
