The Johns Hopkins-Pompeu Fabra University Public Policy Center, a collaboration between the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins University and the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, officially opened its doors yesterday in Barcelona, Spain. The new center will focus on major challenges facing the world, such as climate change, and how they impact the health and wellbeing of populations.
“Threats such as global climate change require new thinking and approaches to protect the health of populations worldwide,” says Michael J. Klag, MD, MPH, dean of the Bloomberg School. “This center will be an international hub linking networks of scholars from all over the world, who will work together to improve the health of societies.”
The Johns Hopkins-Pompeu Fabra University Public Policy Center will also study the implications of the financial and economic crises on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean and how they affect quality of life, as well as the experience of the financial, economic and political integration of the European Union. Faculty from Baltimore will travel to Barcelona for teaching and research opportunities.
The new center builds upon a longstanding relationship between the two universities. The Bloomberg School’s Department of Health Policy and Management has for more than a decade conducted a Fall Institute with Universitat Pompeu Fabra each November in Barcelona and faculty have also contributed to a two-year Public and Social Policy Program, which features courses taught in both Spanish and English.
