Health Security PhD Track at the Bloomberg School of Public Health

The Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security offers a Health Security PhD track within the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health’s Department of Environmental Health and Engineering. This track will prepare future leaders through the study of major biological and health security risks, participation in Center for Health Security research activities, and mentorship from Center faculty to contribute their unique voices and skills to the academic community and ultimately inform global policies that will affect change. While topic areas in the track are wide ranging, they share a common thread of reducing impacts from and increasing resilience to GCBRs.

The track is accepting students for the 2025-2026 school year, and applicants can indicate their interest within their SOPHAS doctoral program applications. Full funding, supported by Open Philanthropy, is available for selected students.

Watch the information session (August 2023) given by the track directors, Tara Kirk Sell, PhD, and Gigi Gronvall, PhD. Read the transcript from the session.

Health Security DrPH Track at the Bloomberg School of Public Health

The Center for Health Security leads the Health Security Track of the schoolwide Doctorate of Public Health (DrPH) degree program. This track is offered as a specialization within the DrPH Environmental Health Concentration and is a part-time, online program. It provides working professionals with advanced training and research opportunities in health security and prepares them to lead in preparedness for and response to public health emergencies. Center for Health Security faculty serve as mentors and course instructors, and the Center provides practicum, research, and networking opportunities for DrPH students. Students typically work full-time during the degree program, and they often leverage their professional networks and experiences to inform their dissertation research. This degree helps students advance in their careers and tackle some of the most difficult problems of health security. For students who are enrolled in the program, the Center also provides a competitive scholarship to offset a portion of the degree costs for students who wish to focus part or all of their dissertation research on a topic related to GCBRs.
