JH-IIRU Team Members Participate in Fourth Annual Emergency Medical Conference in Pakistan

On September 15-16, 2015, JH-IIRU team members participated in the fourth Annual Emergency Medicine Conference (AEMC) at the Aga Khan University, organized in collaboration with the National Institutes of Health, Johns Hopkins University and the Fogarty JHU-Pak International Collaborative Trauma and Injury Research Training Program.

JH-IIRU director, Adnan Hyder, and sr. technical advisor, Junaid Razzak opened the first plenary sessions with discussion on the symbiotic relationship between public health and emergency medicine and improving patient outcomes in emergency medicine, respectively. There is a critical need for emergency care doctors in Pakistan and both Dr. Hyder and Dr. Razzak called for increased efforts to fill this gap and maximize the impact of emergency care.

Also on day one, JH-IIRU assistant scientist, Amber Mehmood participated in a plenary session, “Trauma emergencies: Innovations and challenges” and discussed innovative models of hospital-based trauma registries.  Dr. Razzak finished the first day by participating in a panel discussion, “Experience of heat-related emergencies in Karachi.”

The conference concluded with remarks by Mr Salim Hasham, Vice President Health Services, AKU as well as Dr. Razzak.

This year’s conference focused on integrating clinical care and public health in emergency medicine.
