JH-IIRU Team Members in Bangladesh for Workshop on Drowning Project

From September 28 to October 8, the Johns Hopkins International Injury Research Unit (JH-IIRU) team members were in Bangladesh for the Saving of Lives from Drowning Project (SoLiD).

Assistant scientist, Kunle Alonge and sr. research program coordinator, Shirin Wadhwaniya first held meetings with colleagues from the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research (icddr,b) and the Centre for Injury Prevention and Research, Bangladesh (CIPRB) to discuss the progress of the project and work on data.

From October 4-8, Dr. Wadhwaniya co-facilitated a peer workshop on the qualitative study along with icddr,b and CIPRB. The workshop topics ranged from introductions to qualitative research methods data management to how to prepare for field work. The teams also prepared for field work and reviewed both interview and focus group discussion guides. At the end of the five days, two field site visits in Matlab and Manohardi were conducted.

The Saving of Lives from Drowning (SoLiD) project in Bangladesh, an implementation research study on drowning, aims to reduce the shocking number of childhood deaths due to drowning in the South Asian country.  This two-year study examined how many lives can be saved using a package of interventions for children under five years old.
