The World Conference on Drowning Prevention 2023 Welcomes JH-IIRU in Australia

In early December, the Johns Hopkins International Injury Research Unit (JH-IIRU) had the opportunity to showcase its expertise at the World Conference on Drowning Prevention 2023 held at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre in Australia, spearheading two sessions in the Drowning Prevention Policy and Research workshop that delved into innovative strategies for drowning prevention. 

In the Systems Approaches to Drowning Prevention session led by Dr. Md Zabir Hasan, participants explored the complexities of implementing drowning prevention strategies. This hands-on session emphasized the importance of systems thinking in analyzing these intricate problems. Additionally, attendees engaged in activities like drowning prevention system mapping, gaining tools and insights into a holistic, participatory approach to prevention strategies. 

Complementing this, the Evaluation session focused on crucial assessment concepts. This component of the workshop—co-conducted by Dr. Hasan and Professor Richard Franklin from James Cook University—equipped participants with practical skills in designing, conducting evaluations, and applying these principles to real-world scenarios. The interactive exercises and case studies provided critical insights into the role of systematic assessment in policy and intervention effectiveness. These sessions highlighted the necessity of a systems thinking approach, not just as a theoretical concept, but as a practical toolkit for tackling the multifaceted nature of drowning prevention.  

Finally, JH-IIRU's engagement in these sessions underlined the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health’s commitment to advancing public health through innovative, inclusive, and comprehensive approaches.
